A tamper is one of those really useful things to have in a potting shed that helps to improve germination rates. All you have to do is tamp the soil, sprinkle with water (from a thumb pot waterer ), sow the seeds then apply a thin layer of compost. The dibber is the perfect size for large seeds and small bulbs. The tamper and dibber are handmade from sustainable oak.The tamper diameter is 6.5cm and the dibber is 14cm long.
My tips for sowing seeds:- The depth of compost covering the seeds should be around twice the size of the seed. Any more and the seedlings will struggle to surface. - Compost is best watered before the seed is sown.- You may think you will remember what is in each pot, or recognise it once it germinates, but you won't. Take time to label what you sow.- Plastic bags work just as well as purpose built germinators, but both need checking regularly. Once the seedlings are an inch high they should be taken out of the bag/germinator.- If you have space in your germinator, use a paper potter to make paper pots. When the seedlings are ready to be potted on or planted out, just pop the paper pot into the ground.
