My tips for sowing seeds:
- The depth of compost covering the seeds should be around twice the size of the seed. Any more and the seedlings will struggle to surface.
- Compost is best watered before the seed is sown.
- You may think you will remember what is in each pot, or recognise it once it germinates, but you won't. Take time to label what you sow.
- Plastic bags work just as well as purpose built germinators, but both need checking regularly. Once the seedlings are an inch high they should be taken out of the bag/germinator.
- If you have space in your germinator, use a paper potter to make paper pots. When the seedlings are ready to be potted on or planted out, just pop the paper pot into the ground.
