Outdoor gifts are a good bet and cooking with these tools is easy peasy.
The essential steps for roasting chestnuts are:
- Use chestnuts that have not been hanging around too long. They should be firm not puffy.
- Clip the ends of the shells so that they don't explode when heated.
- Place a dozen or so chestnuts in the pan and hold over a part of the fire which is glowing rather than flaming.
- Give the pan a judicious shake from time to time so that the shells turn a dark brown on all sides. Roasting should take around 15 minutes. Any faster and the chestnuts will be burnt on the outside and raw on the inside.
- Leave to cool slightly before attempting to peel.
And for the marshmallows, a gentle heat is sufficient. Too hot and they will burst into flames!
